US-Iran tensions, global protectionism impact Indonesia's economy: Ex-minister

Global geopolitical crises, particularly the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, are profoundly reshaping Indonesia's economic and trade landscape, according to Enggartiasto Lukita, Indonesia's Trade Minister from 2016 to 2019. He noted that these international dynamics are creating significant shifts in global trade patterns.

Lukita observed that the world is moving away from multilateralism towards an era of "over-protectionism" driven by developed countries. He specifically pointed to changes that began during Donald Trump's first term as U.S. president, suggesting that not everyone has grasped the magnitude of this shift. The former minister emphasized that international conflicts, including the Gaza crisis and U.S.-Iran tensions, have transcended regional or religious divides, becoming global humanitarian issues with direct consequences for world economic stability and international trade flows.

Instead, he advocated for building competitiveness through sustainable efficiency and continuous innovation.

Furthermore, Lukita advised the younger generation that while economic uncertainty can be navigated with various forms of knowledge, mastering information technology and artificial intelligence is crucial. He highlighted the extraordinary shifts and changes occurring in the current economic climate. The discussion took place during a public event at the Ruang Literasi Kaliurang, which regularly hosts prominent speakers and is attended by students, academics, and the general public.
