US leads world in number of churches, Nigeria ranks third

A recent ranking by StatiSense on X highlights the countries with the most church buildings globally, with the United States topping the list. The U.S. is estimated to have between 350,000 and 380,000 church buildings, reflecting its long Christian history and diverse religious landscape, from small local congregations to large megachurches.

Brazil secures the second position with an estimated 280,000 to 300,000 churches. While Catholicism remains a dominant force, the country has seen significant expansion in Evangelical and Pentecostal movements over the years. Nigeria follows in third place, boasting over 100,000 churches, a testament to its large Christian population, particularly the strong presence of Pentecostal churches alongside Catholic and mainline Protestant denominations.

Russia is estimated to have around 90,000 churches, placing it fourth. Many of these are affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church, and religious activity saw an increase after the collapse of the Soviet Union eased restrictions. Mexico ranks fifth with approximately 88,000 churches, continuing a long-standing Catholic tradition while also experiencing growth in Evangelical and other Christian denominations.

The Philippines is sixth on the list with an estimated 85,000 churches, making it one of Asia's most predominantly Christian nations, largely Catholic but with a growing presence of Evangelical and independent Christian groups. China rounds out the top seven with over 70,000 registered places of worship. StatiSense cautions that these figures are estimates of registered buildings and the actual number of churches, including unregistered house churches, could be considerably higher in some nations.
