US lifts TikTok ban on government devices after ByteDance restructuring

The White House has formally rescinded the ban on TikTok usage for U.S. government devices, marking a significant shift after national security concerns had previously led to restrictions. The Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel concluded that the version of TikTok operated by the platform's new U.S. joint venture, TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, no longer falls under the scope of a 2022 prohibition targeting applications controlled by its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

This development comes after the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a memo on Monday, retracting a 2023 directive that barred TikTok on government devices. The initial ban was rooted in concerns over potential data access and influence stemming from ByteDance's ties to China.

The decision to lift the restrictions aligns with an agreement orchestrated during the Trump administration, which involved TikTok transferring primary control of its U.S. operations to a majority American-owned consortium in January. While the federal ban is lifted, individual government agencies retain the discretion to manage TikTok's use within their respective departments, and employees must still adhere to applicable workplace policies.

President Donald Trump had previously indicated that executive branch employees could download TikTok on official devices. The move signifies a complex interplay between national security considerations, international business relations, and the evolving landscape of technology regulation.
