US Open: Polish players learn their opponents, Iga Świątek to open against Chinese player

The US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year, is set to commence, and Polish tennis stars have discovered their opening-round matchups. World No. 1 Iga Świątek, arriving in New York as a strong contender, will face China's Xiyu Wang, ranked 82nd in the WTA standings.

Świątek, who recently secured her first tournament title in nearly a year in Toronto and reached the semifinals in Cincinnati, is aiming for a successful run at Flushing Meadows. A victory at the US Open could significantly boost her chances of qualifying for the WTA Finals. She may encounter her first significant challenge in the fourth round, potentially facing Belinda Bencic of Switzerland or Madison Keys of the United States.

Looking further into the draw, a quarterfinal clash could pit Świątek against former champion Naomi Osaka of Japan or Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, who is vying for the world No. 1 ranking currently held by Aryna Sabalenka. A potential semifinal opponent could be Coco Gauff of the United States, Mirra Andreeva of Russia, or Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.

Less fortunate in the draw are fellow Polish players Maja Chwalińska and Magdalena Fręch. Chwalińska is set to compete against the experienced American doubles specialist Taylor Townsend (ranked 95th), while Fręch will face her compatriot, 18-year-old Iva Jović.
