US records highest monthly migrant detentions under Trump administration

U.S. immigration authorities apprehended more than 43,000 migrants in June, marking the highest monthly total recorded during the Trump administration. This figure, reported by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), suggests that the record may be surpassed in July if the current pace of operations continues.

The official statistics for fiscal year 2026 show ICE made 39,563 arrests in June, while Customs and Border Protection (CBP) apprehended 3,575 individuals, bringing the total to 43,138 migrants in federal custody. This surge is directly linked to deportation targets set by the White House to accelerate campaign promises.

Preliminary data indicates an intensified arrest rate in July, averaging 1,593 daily arrests by ICE and CBP combined. If this trend persists, the monthly total could approach 50,000 apprehensions. However, government sources cited by The New York Times suggest agents are still falling short of the White House's goal of 2,000 daily arrests, raising questions about the long-term operational sustainability of this deployment.

The increased frequency of raids in major urban areas has ignited significant protests and political tension, especially following the deaths of three migrants during federal interventions in July. Among the deceased were Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican shot in Houston on July 7; Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 26-year-old Colombian shot in Maine on July 13; and a Mexican citizen who died after being hit by a truck on a Florida highway on July 14 while attempting to evade an ICE traffic stop.
