US redeploys embassy staff to West Asia amid reduced Iran tensions

The United States is beginning to redeploy personnel to its diplomatic missions across West Asia, signaling a decreased immediate threat of conflict with Iran. This move suggests a shift in Washington's risk assessment, even as diplomatic efforts to resolve ongoing conflicts remain stalled.

Sources indicate that staff will return to U.S. missions in Lebanon, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Baghdad. Family members of personnel will also be permitted to return to the U.S. mission in Riyadh. However, some embassies will operate at reduced capacity, with certain missions limited to 85 percent of their approved staff levels. The redeployment is expected to begin as early as this week.

This decision comes after the U.S. and its allies withdrew staff from West Asian embassies following escalating tensions with Iran. Some U.S. embassies in Arab Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, had previously been targeted, leading to temporary closures. While intense fighting has subsided, maritime blockades and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz persist.

A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department stated that the department continually assesses security levels at its diplomatic missions worldwide. "Based on our latest assessments, we are adjusting staffing levels at several missions in West Asia to ensure we can continue to achieve U.S. foreign policy goals while protecting the safety and well-being of our personnel," the spokesperson said. Reports suggest that U.S. embassies in Jordan, Oman, Kuwait, and Qatar are also expected to increase staffing, with missions in Israel, Jordan, and Oman eventually returning to full capacity. Other missions in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Lebanon, Iraq, Kuwait, and Bahrain will initially operate at reduced capacities.
