US Senate passes bill for sanctions on Russian oil and gas exports

The U.S. Senate has voted overwhelmingly to approve a new sanctions package aimed at pressuring Russia's energy sector and curtailing funds used for its war in Ukraine. The legislation, which passed with an 86-11 majority, seeks to impose significant financial penalties on Russian oil and gas exports.

The bill grants President Donald Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the top five buyers of Russian energy resources. The exact tariff levels could be adjusted over time, contingent on a country's efforts to reduce its reliance on Russian oil and gas. The list of top importers would be reassessed every 180 days.

Furthermore, the sanctions are designed to target the five countries most actively assisting Russia in circumventing existing energy sanctions. The specific measures aim to increase the financial burden on nations that continue to facilitate Russian energy trade, thereby hindering Moscow's ability to finance its military operations.

For the sanctions to become law, the bill must now be approved by the House of Representatives. However, with the House currently in recess, a vote is not anticipated until September. If passed by the House, the legislation would represent a significant escalation of U.S. economic pressure on Russia's vital energy exports.
