US signs nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia, sparking proliferation concerns

The United States and Saudi Arabia have signed a nuclear cooperation agreement, which the U.S. Department of Energy calls a "peaceful cooperation agreement in the field of nuclear energy." This deal is expected to create broad opportunities for American companies to participate in Saudi Arabia's nuclear energy program.

Alongside the cooperation pact, a bilateral nuclear safety assurance agreement was also signed. The Department of Energy stated that together, these agreements establish a legal framework for a multi-decade, multi-billion dollar partnership. This collaboration aims to advance several priority economic and strategic goals, including nuclear non-proliferation.

While specific details of the nuclear agreement remain undisclosed, previous media reports suggested that Saudi Arabia might be permitted to enrich uranium within its territory for nuclear fuel production. This would be for a U.S.-built enrichment plant, rather than relying on imported fuel. Experts and former officials in Israel have expressed concerns that this plan could eventually enable Saudi Arabia to develop a nuclear weapon. However, others argue that such a development would likely take decades and face significant international opposition.
