The United States has strongly condemned China's recent actions near the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, labeling them as "destabilizing" and an attempt to advance territorial claims under "dubious" environmental pretenses. The U.S. State Department specifically called out China's "national nature reserve" initiative around the shoal.

Scarborough Shoal, a resource-rich reef formation located significantly closer to the Philippines than to mainland China, is a focal point of territorial disputes. The U.S. asserts that China's policies effectively deny Filipino fishermen access to their traditional fishing grounds, escalating tensions in the already contentious waters.
