US Southern Command Chief Vows United Front with Colombia Against Drug Trafficking

The chief of the U.S. Southern Command (Southcom), Francis Donovan, declared his intention to forge a unified front with Colombia to combat drug trafficking. This commitment was made at the conclusion of a three-day visit to the South American nation, marking the first visit by a high-ranking U.S. official following the inauguration of President Abelardo de la Espriella on August 7.

Donovan expressed strong admiration for the Colombian forces, stating, "The dedication of the Colombian forces with whom we were this week is unparalleled." He outlined the strategy: "By forging a unified front, we will dismantle narcoterrorist operations, eliminate their leadership, and eradicate their violent networks that threaten our shared security and sovereignty." These remarks were shared via the Southcom's X account.

During his visit, Donovan toured the Tolemaida Military Fort in Tolima, the country's largest military installation. There, he aimed to gain firsthand insight into the capabilities of the Army Aviation. Simultaneously, the Commander of the Colombian Military Forces, General Erik Rodríguez, emphasized on X the importance of strengthening these capabilities to ensure a force with greater mobility, reach, and response capacity, stating, "We continue to work monolithically for the security of Colombia."

Donovan also met with Colombia's Minister of Defense, Jorge Eduardo Mora, in Tumaco, a border area with Ecuador. Their discussions focused on bolstering bilateral cooperation against drug trafficking and organized crime in the strategically vital Pacific region. This meeting in Nariño department followed Donovan's arrival in Bogotá, where he conferred with the new Colombian military leadership appointed by President De la Espriella.

The visit takes place as the new Colombian administration seeks to deepen its security relationship with Washington, a shift from the previous administration under former President Gustavo Petro (2022-2026). Colombia recently joined the Americas Coalition Against Cartels (A3C), a U.S.-led initiative to coordinate regional efforts against transnational drug trafficking and organized crime. Donovan highlighted the unprecedented speed and determination with which the A3C and the Western Hemisphere Joint Task Force are advancing.
