US Urges UN Security Council for Full Arms Embargo on Sudan

The United States has called on the United Nations Security Council to extend an existing arms embargo to cover the entirety of Sudan. This plea comes as the current embargo, specifically targeting the Darfur region for over two decades, is scheduled to expire on September 12 unless a new resolution is adopted.

U.S. envoy Massad Boulos expressed concerns that the escalating conflict within Sudan risks regional destabilization, potentially drawing neighboring nations deeper into the war. The U.S. proposal includes extending the embargo to encompass drones, a type of advanced weaponry reportedly being used in the conflict.

Russia, a permanent member of the Security Council with veto power, has cautioned against new measures that could impact the Sudanese army. Sudan has been embroiled in a brutal civil war for over three years between its army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who are vying for control. This conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced millions.

The UN and aid organizations describe Sudan as facing the world's worst humanitarian crisis, characterized by widespread displacement and famine in several areas. While Sudan's UN envoy supports a technical extension of the Darfur embargo, they also warn against changes that might weaken the national army. The Darfur region, roughly the size of Spain, has witnessed some of the most severe violence.
