Uzbekistan appoints its first ambassador to Syria

Uzbekistan has appointed its first ambassador to Syria, giving the post to Ayubkhon Yunusov, who already serves as ambassador to Kuwait and Iraq from his residence in Kuwait.

Yunusov presented copies of his credentials to Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, the Dunyo news agency reported. Their meeting focused on trade and economic cooperation, political consultations between the two foreign ministries and other forms of cooperation.

Al-Shaibani said Syria attached great importance to developing relations with Central Asian countries, particularly Uzbekistan. He also highlighted Syria’s appreciation for assistance and support Uzbekistan had provided in previous years.

The two sides discussed establishing an Uzbek-Syrian intergovernmental committee on trade and economic cooperation. They also considered creating a formal mechanism for political consultations and pursuing other joint initiatives. Yunusov has served as Uzbekistan’s ambassador to Kuwait since February 2024 and as ambassador to Iraq since October 2025.
