Valparaíso to close Avenida España this weekend for landslide prevention work

Avenida España in Valparaíso will be closed this weekend as authorities undertake critical work to prevent further landslides. The closure, scheduled from Friday midnight until Sunday at 6 PM, will affect the stretch between Amunátegui and 18 de Septiembre streets.

The measure is necessary to address damage caused by a recent landslide and to mitigate risks of future collapses. Presidential delegate Manuel Millones stated that the Ministry of Housing and Serviu are collaborating on the project. The immediate goal is to clear unstable material that poses a threat to Avenida España and the public.

Millones explained that the first phase of the work involves clearing the hillside. This includes preliminary tasks to secure the route, cut down trees, and remove any rocks that could potentially fall. This operation requires the full closure of Avenida España to ensure the safety of workers and the public, and to prevent debris from falling onto the avenue.

The landslide has already impacted public transit in the area on two occasions. The current work aims to stabilize the hillside and ensure the long-term safety of the vital thoroughfare.
