Vancouver selects preferred partner for MLB expansion bid

Vancouver has officially selected The Show Vancouver, a group spearheaded by local real estate developer Zack Ross, as its preferred partner to pursue a Major League Baseball expansion franchise. Ross, president of Cape Group, leads the initiative aimed at bringing an MLB team to the city.

The core of The Show Vancouver's proposal centers on constructing a new ballpark alongside a mixed-use development. However, crucial details such as the potential site for this development, the estimated project cost, its projected economic impact, and the financing strategy have not yet been revealed. The city council has directed staff to enter a memorandum of understanding with The Show Vancouver to establish a framework for collaboration, including due diligence for potential ballpark sites.

While MLB has not formally announced any expansion plans, Commissioner Rob Manfred has previously expressed a desire for the league to grow from its current 30 teams to 32 before his planned retirement in 2029. Manfred has acknowledged the potential for another Canadian city to join the league. The Show Vancouver will bear all costs and financial risks associated with advancing its bid, while the city will collaborate on site selection and land-use decisions, subject to council approval.

Past baseball events in Vancouver include exhibition series held at BC Place Stadium between 1984 and 1994. However, significant renovations to the stadium in 2011, including the addition of a retractable roof, rendered it incapable of hosting baseball games. The Show Vancouver is collaborating with BRS Sports, a sports marketing firm, and has retained architectural and project management firms, including Populous and CAA Icon, to assist in developing the proposal. Endorsements have come from the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade and former B.C. premier Mike Harcourt.
