Vape Puff Equals Pack of Cigarettes: Indonesian Doctor Warns of Dangers

Vaping, often perceived as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, poses significant health risks, according to medical experts. Dr. Cynthia Centauri, a pediatrician specializing in pediatric respirology, highlighted that vape products contain high nicotine levels. She stated that some vapes deliver nicotine in a single puff equivalent to an entire pack of conventional cigarettes, posing a danger, especially to children exposed to the vapor.

Medical literature has documented short-term negative effects of vaping on children, including respiratory problems such as bronchitis, pneumonia, lung inflammation, and spontaneous pneumothorax. While long-term effects are still under extensive research due to the relatively recent widespread use of vapes, Dr. Centauri noted the potential for long-term risks like lung cancer, given the high nicotine content.

Dr. Centauri also criticized the marketing of vapes, which often feature appealing flavors like matcha and strawberry. This packaging, she explained, can create a false impression that vapes are not dangerous, potentially leading consumers to view them as aromatherapy or comfort products. The doctor emphasized that despite these deceptive marketing tactics, vapes are inherently hazardous.

The lack of stringent regulation in Indonesia exacerbates the issue, allowing vape products with very high nicotine levels to remain on the market. In contrast, several other countries have implemented strict regulations on nicotine content in vapes, prohibiting products that exceed certain limits.
