Vasco da Gama, potential Olimpia rival, presents Pedro Emanuel as new coach

Brazilian club Vasco da Gama, a potential opponent for Olimpia in the Copa Sudamericana, has announced the appointment of Portuguese coach Pedro Emanuel as their new manager. Emanuel has signed a long-term contract with the Rio de Janeiro-based club, committing his services until December 2027.

Before Vasco da Gama can set their sights on a potential clash with Olimpia, the team must first navigate a challenging playoff round against Colombia's Independiente Medellín. The winner of that tie will earn the right to face the Paraguayan club in the next continental stage. Emanuel's arrival signals a new direction for Vasco as they aim to improve their performance in both domestic and international competitions.

The 51-year-old coach, who was most recently with Saudi Arabian club Al-Fayha, officially takes charge of the first team on Saturday. Emanuel's coaching career has seen him manage clubs in Portugal, Spain, and extensively in the Arab world, including stints with Al-Ain, Al-Nassr, and Al-Khaleej.

Emanuel inherits a team in a precarious position. Vasco da Gama has been without a permanent head coach since Renato Gaúcho's contract was terminated on June 18 following a series of poor results. The team is currently in the relegation zone of the Brazilian Championship, making Emanuel's task a significant challenge from the outset. His debut is scheduled for July 16.
