Venezuela Announces New Recovery Phase Post-Earthquake, Promises Thousands of Homes

Venezuela is entering a new phase of recovery two months after earthquakes struck on June 24, with acting President Delcy Rodríguez announcing accelerated reconstruction efforts and the delivery of over 4,000 new homes by the end of the year. The government also plans to implement measures to enhance public services, security, and state operations.

Rodríguez acknowledged that thousands of families are still grappling with the aftermath of the emergency, assuring them that government support and attention would continue throughout the reconstruction process. To date, 335 new homes have been delivered, benefiting 1,172 people, while 1,001 existing homes have been repaired, impacting 3,503 individuals. A significant focus remains on removing debris from damaged buildings. The 'Plan Despeje Digno y Seguro' has cleared approximately 580,000 tons of debris, representing 28% of the total. This effort involves Venezuelan teams, international specialists, and United Nations agencies, adhering to safety protocols and respecting the emotional significance of the destroyed sites for families.

In parallel, Rodríguez reported advancements in public services, particularly the electrical system, with agreements signed to incorporate new megawatts and an expansion plan for thermoelectric capacity to meet increased demand. The acting president also highlighted the performance of the oil sector, stating that national production now exceeds 1.23 million barrels per day, the highest level since February 2019. The government has signed 50 strategic agreements in oil and gas, encompassing new investments in over 76 productive hydrocarbon areas. Rodríguez presented these figures as indicators of economic recovery, despite the ongoing challenges.
