Venezuela congratulates new Peruvian president following resumption of diplomatic ties

The Venezuelan government has congratulated Keiko Fujimori on her inauguration as Peru's president, following the recent agreement to progressively resume diplomatic relations. The two nations had severed ties in 2024 after Venezuela's government, then led by Nicolás Maduro, broke relations with Peru. At that time, Peru's foreign minister cited "fraud" in Maduro's contested re-election.

Venezuela's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Tuesday, congratulating "the people of Peru on the inauguration of their elected president, Keiko Fujimori Higuchi, to whom we wish the greatest success in the exercise of her functions." The statement also expressed the Executive's "firm willingness to strengthen the bonds of dialogue" with Fujimori's incoming administration.

The decision to resume relations marks a significant shift after years of diplomatic estrangement. The progressive re-establishment of ties was agreed upon just days prior to Fujimori's inauguration. The Venezuelan government, operating under significant pressure from Washington, appears keen to foster better diplomatic connections in the region.
