Venezuela Signs Miyamoto International Contract to Clear Earthquake Debris

Venezuela has signed an emergency services contract to remove three million metric tons of debris left by the devastating double earthquake that struck on June 24.

Public Works Minister Juan Ramírez and Miyamoto International founder Kit Miyamoto signed the agreement in Caracas. Acting Venezuelan leader Delcy Rodríguez and U.S. chargé d’affaires John Barrett attended the ceremony.

According to Venezuela’s Communications Ministry, the deal also provides for technical knowledge-sharing, stronger construction standards and advanced protocols to prevent disasters and protect the population. Miyamoto said the company was combining its capabilities with Venezuela’s private sector and aiming to work jointly with the Venezuelan population.

Ramírez praised Miyamoto’s international experience in infrastructure, seismic events and post-disaster operations. He said cooperation with the U.S. government would help consolidate the requirements for the total reconstruction of La Guaira state, north of Caracas and the area worst affected by the earthquakes.

Miyamoto International, which also specializes in disaster-risk management, has monitored conditions in Venezuela since the quakes and shared engineering updates, field observations and response resources as new information became available. The latest official tally, issued on Aug. 24, reported at least 6,509 deaths, 14,239 homes with moderate damage and 11,001 with severe damage.
