Venus Williams falls in Cincinnati debut

Emiliana Arango delivered a stunning upset on Friday, defeating American tennis icon Venus Williams in the opening round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. The victory prevented the 46-year-old Williams from securing her first singles win of the year.

Arango, currently ranked 95th in the world, dominated the match, securing a swift 6-2, 6-2 victory in just 66 minutes. This loss continues a difficult season for Williams, who has now lost all 11 of her singles matches this year, following early exits in Washington and Toronto.

The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion struggled throughout the match, particularly with her serve. She committed a total of 40 unforced errors, a stark contrast to Arango's nine. Arango, 21 years Williams's junior, showcased a strong performance after advancing from the qualifying rounds, where she defeated Argentina's Nadia Podoroska.

Despite her singles defeat, Williams is set to return to the Cincinnati courts for the women's doubles. She will partner with her sister, Serena Williams, marking their reunion as a doubles team after they last competed together at the US Open in 2022. The legendary sisters have a formidable record, having won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals.

Arango will advance to the second round, where she faces a significant challenge against Poland's Iga Swiatek, the reigning champion of the WTA 1000 event in Toronto.
