Veteran Recounts 'Hell' of Banovina Battle, Hopes for National Unity

A veteran of the elite "Gromovi" (Thunder) Guard Brigade has recounted the harrowing experiences of the "Operation Storm" offensive in Banovina, describing the intense combat and the pervasive sense of uncertainty. Reflecting on the nearly three decades since the Croatian War of Independence, the veteran, Domjanić, shared the visceral fear and determination felt by soldiers on the front lines.

"We thought we wouldn't make it; we didn't even know Knin had fallen," Domjanić stated, conveying the chaotic and perilous conditions faced during the operation. The veteran's words paint a stark picture of the "hell" endured by those fighting for Croatia's sovereignty. He recalled the moments of doubt and the sheer will to survive and succeed against formidable odds.

Now, nearly thirty years later, Domjanić anticipates a deeply emotional return to Knin for commemorative events. He hopes to reconnect with comrades from various Guard brigades and, crucially, wishes to see a display of national unity from the country's leadership. This unity, he emphasized, mirrors the solidarity and shared purpose that defined the defenders during the war, a sentiment he hopes will be honored and reflected in the present day.
