Viborg suffer first defeat in Jutland handball classic

Viborg HK came back down to earth Tuesday night after winning its first two matches of the season. Ikast Håndbold beat Viborg 30-25 at home in the women’s handball league, leaving both teams with four points after three games.

The traditional meeting between the two established clubs did not match the stature of earlier editions. Both teams made too many mistakes at times, reflecting how early the season remains.

Viborg trailed for much of the match but fought back to level the score at 17-17 ten minutes into the second half. The visitors then lost momentum, and their goalkeepers, Stine Broløs and Louise Bak Jensen, struggled to make an impact after the break.

Ikast were not at their best in attack either, but they held Viborg to 25 goals. Swedish playmaker Emma Lindqvist led the home team with seven goals. “Games against Viborg are always great, and it is lovely to win at home,” she told TV 2 Sport. “We defended well and kept Viborg down to 25 goals, but we also struggled a little in attack.”
