Video: Ronaldo Martínez gives Vélez Sarsfield the win

Paraguayan forward Ronaldo Martínez scored his first goal for Vélez Sarsfield on Saturday, giving the team a 1-0 victory over Estudiantes de La Plata in the eighth round of Argentina’s Clausura tournament.

The result lifted Vélez alongside Gimnasia y Esgrima at the top of Zone A, with both teams on 16 points. Boca Juniors remained sixth after surrendering a 2-1 lead against Gimnasia y Esgrima in Mendoza. Esteban Fernández equalized in the 91st minute after Boca had scored through Alan Velasco and Kevin Zenón.

Boca had recently beaten Vélez on penalties to reach the Copa Argentina quarterfinals. The team will host São Paulo on Tuesday in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals.

San Lorenzo beat Talleres de Córdoba 1-0 after Néstor Gorosito’s departure as coach and while awaiting Rubén Darío Insúa’s return. Talleres had also parted ways with Jorge Sampaoli during the week. In the relegation battle, Aldosivi defeated Banfield 3-1, while Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata beat Tigre 2-1. Earlier, Sarmiento defeated Estudiantes de Río Cuarto 2-0, and Belgrano drew 1-1 with Huracán, as did Platense and Deportivo Riestra. Sunday’s schedule includes the Rosario derby between Rosario Central and Newell’s Old Boys, River Plate against Independiente Rivadavia, Independiente against Central Córdoba, and Racing Club against Atlético Tucumán. The two leaders before the round, Argentinos Juniors and Instituto, will play away on Monday against Barracas Central and Unión de Santa Fe, respectively.
