Vietnam Plans Nearly 1 Trillion Dong Upgrade to Turn Mộc Bài Into Smart Gateway

Vietnam’s Tây Ninh province is preparing a major upgrade of Mộc Bài international border gate, envisioning a modern gateway with smart digital infrastructure, improved appearance and facilities that meet defense, security and foreign-relations requirements.

The provincial economic-zone management board said relevant agencies were completing the feasibility study for the Mộc Bài Infrastructure Development Project to 2030. Tây Ninh has approved total investment of more than 962 billion dong. Compensation, support and resettlement account for more than 179 billion dong, with the remainder allocated to construction, equipment and related costs.

The project has three main components. It will expand the road linking the Ho Chi Minh City-Mộc Bài expressway to the international border gate, upgrade and enlarge the integrated inspection station and improve the landscape around landmark 171, and build a drainage channel for the border-gate area.

The selected plan keeps the approved route and scale for the expressway connection. The road will run about 4.45 kilometers from the border gate to the Ho Chi Minh City-Mộc Bài expressway, with a combined carriageway width of 38 meters and sidewalks totaling 15 meters. The design also includes a median, reserved land for greenery, lighting, drainage and traffic-safety systems.

The existing inspection and landmark area will be renovated across about 1,500 square meters, while roughly 1,900 square meters of new space will be built on both sides. The facilities serving immigration control will cover about 3,400 square meters in total. The plan also includes an initial 418-meter road for imported freight vehicles, with further construction to depend on available funding. A drainage system will cover about 3.53 kilometers, while a dual-use border canal will be studied separately to avoid duplicated investment.

Passenger movements through Mộc Bài increased from approximately 1.289 million in 2015 to 2.081 million in 2025. Authorities forecast about 2.645 million movements in 2030 and 6.91 million in 2050.
