Vietnam: Restaurants illegally built around historic church to be demolished

Authorities in Ninh Binh, Vietnam, are moving to clear 23 illegal structures along the Hải Tiến coast, with 12 of these being restaurants clustered around the iconic Hải Lý Church ruins.

According to Mai Đức Nghĩa, Deputy Chairman of the Hải Tiến Commune People's Committee, as of August 18, residents were actively preparing to relocate their businesses. They are constructing new restaurants within the permitted dike area to move their operations after dismantling the illegal structures. Nghĩa stated that while no businesses had yet dismantled their premises by August 17, all owners had committed to voluntary removal in line with the commune's plan.

These structures, built over several years, encroached upon the coastal area and the vicinity of the Hải Lý Church ruins, a popular tourist spot. The encroachment has marred the landscape and diminished the space around the landmark. The Hải Tiến Commune People's Committee has set a deadline of August 30 for voluntary dismantling. Failure to comply will result in forced removal by the authorities between September 1 and September 30.
