Vietnam searches former hospital site for fallen soldiers' remains

Ho Chi Minh City authorities are undertaking a meticulous search for the remains of fallen soldiers at the former site of K76A Hospital, a location significant for its wartime medical role. This effort is part of a broader initiative to locate and repatriate the remains of martyrs.

The search area, located in Phu Lap commune, Hoa Hiep, is currently a vast field used for cassava cultivation. Military engineers from the Ho Chi Minh City Command's 46th Engineer Company are conducting mine clearance operations to ensure safety before excavation begins. Specialized equipment, including electro-magnetic imaging devices provided by experts from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, is being employed to detect potential burial sites.

Historical records reveal that K76A Hospital played a crucial role in treating wounded soldiers during key military campaigns, including the Binh Gia operation and subsequent battles in the Ba Ria-Long Khanh region between 1965 and 1967. The hospital served numerous units, including regiments from the 5th and 9th Divisions, local forces, and guerrilla units. After the country's reunification, the hospital's facilities were integrated into other medical units, and the K76A designation ceased to exist.

Authorities are actively seeking information from various sources, including veterans, former medical personnel, local residents, and relatives of fallen soldiers. They are appealing for any documents, maps, diaries, photographs, or personal recollections related to the hospital's operations and the burial sites of soldiers during the 1965-1967 period. This collaborative approach aims to maximize the chances of successfully locating and honoring the remains of those who served.
