Vietnamese Pilot Flees War, Finds New Life and Career in Taiwan

Pham Dinh Thi's life took a dramatic turn during the final days of the Vietnam War. Piloting a CH-47 helicopter, he fled the advancing North Vietnamese forces, eventually ditching the aircraft at sea as fuel ran out.

His desperate situation was resolved when a Taiwanese warship, on a mission to evacuate civilians, spotted his helicopter and rescued him and his companions. This chance encounter led Pham Dinh Thi to Taiwan, where he began a new chapter in his life.

In Taiwan, Pham Dinh Thi embarked on a second military career, joining the Air Force's rescue team. His extensive flying experience, honed in the crucible of war, found a new purpose in peacetime operations. Years later, he transitioned to the civilian aviation sector, serving as a flight instructor and airline pilot.

His remarkable journey from a refugee pilot to a respected member of Taiwan's Air Force and later its civil aviation system is a testament to his resilience and adaptability amidst the turbulent currents of history.
