Vilnius Airport responds to criticism over inscriptions

Vilnius Airport has clarified that commercial partners operating within the airport are responsible for the inscriptions and signage used in their own spaces. This statement comes after public criticism regarding the English translations displayed in the newly opened "Duty Free" store.

The airport's representatives asserted that Lithuanian Airports is responsible for preparing and correctly displaying passenger information and signage, such as information screens and stickers. However, they differentiated this from the in-store commercial signage.

Earlier, Giedrius Drukteinis voiced his strong disapproval of the English inscriptions like "Lithuanian best," "Local fashion," and "Lithuanian spirits" in the "Duty Free" shop. He questioned the quality of the translations, suggesting they might have been done by a poor translation tool or an inexperienced translator. Drukteinis argued that the translations were grammatically and stylistically incorrect, even for non-native English speakers.

Drukteinis's comments, shared on social media, resonated with many Lithuanians who also noticed the inscriptions. Some users agreed with his assessment, with one commenter humorously noting that "Lithuanian spirits" sounded like "Lithuanian ghosts." Another user suggested that perhaps Russian would have been clearer if the translations were so problematic.
