Vilnius District Considers State of Emergency After Severe Storm Damage

Vilnius district municipality in Lithuania is weighing the declaration of an emergency situation following severe storm damage. Mayor Robertas Duchnevičius announced on Monday that the municipality is currently gathering information on the extent of the damage suffered by residents.

The decision to declare a state of emergency hinges on confirmation from the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service regarding whether a natural or catastrophic meteorological phenomenon was recorded in the area. "After receiving the conclusions of the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service, we will assess the possibility of declaring an emergency situation in the most affected territories – Avižieniai and Riešė elderships," the mayor stated on Facebook.

Such a declaration would significantly enhance the municipality's capacity to provide aid. It would enable greater mobilization of human and financial resources to address the storm's aftermath, including clearing fallen trees and assisting municipal institutions, legal entities, and non-governmental organizations. The mayor emphasized that this would allow for more comprehensive support to both residents and public bodies.

Emergency services and contractors have been working to clear fallen trees and reopen roads, as well as restore power supply. Residents whose property has been damaged or who have fallen trees on their land are urged to contact their local eldership. The collected damage information will be reviewed by a commission for the use of the Vilnius District Municipality Mayor's reserve funds, with the hope of compensating some residents for damaged housing.
