Vilnius Mayor Promises Completion of 11 Key Street Projects by September

Vilnius drivers are bracing for a potentially chaotic September as extensive street repairs continue across the capital. With construction ongoing in 97 locations and traffic restricted in 21, concerns are mounting that the city could grind to a halt once students return to school and daily commutes intensify.

Mayor Valdas Benkunskas has acknowledged the public's frustration, stating, "I understand that currently, a bit more patience is truly needed on Vilnius streets. There is a considerable amount of street maintenance work happening. I don't want to pretend; I truly understand that this work causes certain inconveniences."

To alleviate the anticipated congestion, the mayor has promised that the municipality's "homework" will be completed in 11 essential areas before September. These include major thoroughfares and streets such as Geležinio Vilko gatvė, Kalvarijų gatvė, P. Lukšio gatvė, and Laisvės prospektas, among others. This commitment aims to ensure that the primary driving surfaces are functional before the peak traffic period.

However, Benkunskas clarified that this deadline applies specifically to the road surfaces. Work on pedestrian and bicycle paths in these areas will extend beyond September, meaning some disruptions will continue. The city is balancing the necessity of infrastructure upgrades with the immediate impact on its residents' daily lives.
