Volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau sends Serang schools online while Tangerang stays in class

Schools in Serang switched to remote learning for one day after volcanic ash from the eruption of Anak Krakatau spread across the area.

The policy covers early-childhood education, kindergartens, primary schools and junior high schools on Monday. Serang Education and Culture Agency chief Ahmad Nuri said students should study from home to protect their health and safety.

All educational units from early-childhood education, kindergarten, primary school and junior high school under the Serang Education and Culture Agency are temporarily switching to distance learning, or studying from home, for one day.

The agency is coordinating with the Regional Disaster Management Agency and the Environmental Agency to assess air quality and the direction of the ash. If air conditions and the ash remain hazardous, remote learning could be extended. Parents were asked to support children during home learning, reduce their outdoor activity and ensure they wear medical masks if they must go outside.

Schools in Tangerang regency and Tangerang city planned to continue face-to-face classes on Monday despite the ash covering parts of the area. Students must wear masks, and outdoor learning activities will be limited. Officials said they were still reviewing whether to move classes online if conditions from the eruption changed.
