Volkswagen electrifies GTI legacy with first-ever ID. Polo GTI

Volkswagen is electrifying its legendary GTI badge with the new ID. Polo GTI, marking the brand's first fully electric model to bear the iconic moniker. The German automaker aims to demonstrate that a hot hatch can still deliver thrills without a gasoline engine, even incorporating a "retro mode" that mimics a cassette tape on the digital dashboard instead of sterile digital displays.

Launched 50 years after the original GTI represented a rebellion against automotive boredom, the electric version begins a new chapter with a 226 horsepower electric motor. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, with power exclusively sent to the front wheels, mirroring the 1976 Golf GTI. Volkswagen emphasizes that the car's character closely resembles classic GTI models, featuring an electronically controlled differential lock, progressive steering, and standard DCC adaptive suspension. The 290 Nm of torque is instantly available.

The ID. Polo GTI boasts a 52 kWh (net) battery, offering a WLTP range of up to 424 km. Fast charging from 10% to 80% is estimated to take around 24 minutes with a 105 kW DC charger. Visually, the car pays homage to its heritage with a red stripe across the front, a honeycomb grille, and motorsport-inspired sporty details. The "Pure Positive" design language is evident, with red accents and sporty seats featuring a reimagined GTI plaid pattern inside.

Beyond performance and heritage, the ID. Polo GTI also aims for practicality, with a trunk capacity of 441 liters, expandable to 1240 liters when the rear seats are folded. It can also tow a trailer weighing up to 1.2 tons. Optional features include a Harman Kardon audio system, a panoramic roof, and air suspension.
