Volunteers give elderly rides on electric tandem bikes in Hoeleden

In Hoeleden, Belgium, a new non-profit called De Fietskompagnon is bringing back the joy of cycling for the elderly and less mobile. The organization uses a special electric tandem bicycle, a three-wheeled vehicle where two people sit side-by-side. One person steers, while the other can pedal along or simply enjoy the ride.

Residents can request a ride with a volunteer "bike pilot." Alternatively, family members or friends can train as "buddies" and take someone out themselves. The "K" in Kompagnon refers to the municipality of Kortenaken. The electric tandem bicycle cost over 10,000 euros. The non-profit acquired it through support from local residents and businesses, the Cera Foundation, and the King Baudouin Foundation. "We believe it's important that people can use the bike at a reasonable price," Hinnekint concluded.
