Vosanibola to answer corruption charges after court ruling

Former Fijian Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament Peceli Vosanibola will answer corruption charges after the Suva Magistrates Court found enough evidence to proceed. Resident Magistrate Joseph Daurewa ruled that the evidence presented by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) was sufficient for the case to move to the defense stage.

Vosanibola faces two charges: one count of Providing False Information to a Public Servant and one count of Obtaining Financial Advantage. Prosecutors allege that on January 29, 2019, Vosanibola falsely stated his permanent residence was in Bureta, Ovalau, to the Acting Secretary-General to Parliament. Furthermore, it is alleged that between August 2019 and March 2020, he claimed parliamentary allowances totaling $19,749.50 while purportedly residing in Nadera, Nasinu.

Following the court's decision, Vosanibola was informed of his legal options during the defense phase, including his right to remain silent, provide sworn testimony, or call witnesses. The case has been adjourned until August 28, when Vosanibola is expected to declare how he plans to proceed with his defense. Legal Aid Commission represented Vosanibola, while FICAC State Counsel Setefano Komaibaba prosecuted the case.
