Vršič sees three cycling and motorbike crashes in just days

A cyclist crashed into a road barrier in Trenta on Sunday, the third accident involving a cyclist or motorcyclist in the Vršič area in recent days.

The cyclist struck the barrier at 10:21 and fell onto the road, according to Slovenia’s Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief. Firefighters from the Bovec volunteer fire brigade provided first aid before Tolmin emergency medical staff arrived. The cyclist was then taken to hospital. Bovec firefighters also helped direct traffic and care for the injured person.

The previous day, a female cyclist fell and suffered injuries on the Trenta-Vršič road. Bovec firefighters secured the scene and treated her until paramedics arrived. A Slovenian military helicopter later flew her to the University Medical Centre Ljubljana.

The first of the three crashes occurred on Friday, when a 66-year-old German motorcyclist hit a barrier on the road toward Vršič. Nova Gorica police said he was travelling from Vršič toward Trenta and failed to notice the barrier in time. After seeing it, he braked hard, lost his balance and fell over the motorcycle’s handlebars onto the road. Rescuers and firefighters treated him at the scene before he was flown to Ljubljana for further care.

Bovec police are still checking the circumstances of that crash and will take the appropriate action once the procedure is complete.
