Vuo Health Centre nears completion

Residents of Vuo and Vunika in Fiji are anticipating improved access to essential healthcare as the multi-million-dollar Vuo Health Centre nears completion. The new facility is set to alleviate the burden on communities currently traveling to Labasa Subdivisional Hospital and Nasea Health Centre for medical services.

Ponsami Narayan, a resident of Vunika, highlighted the significant relief the health center will provide, especially for the elderly who often struggle with transportation. "So many old people are staying in Vunika. They haven’t got the transport to go to the hospital. So they can come walk down to this hospital to take care of themselves," Narayan said. He noted that individuals without access to taxis or other transport sometimes forgo medical care when sick, underscoring the importance of localized health services.

The journey to Labasa can also present challenges, particularly during emergencies. Heavy traffic on the main road can delay access to hospital services, making proximity to care crucial. The Vuo Health Centre aims to reduce travel time and transportation costs for surrounding communities by offering essential medical services within closer reach.

The project represents a collaborative effort between government and private sectors to expand healthcare access. The facility is expected to open its doors to patients in the coming months.
