WAFCON 2026: Malawi shock holders Nigeria as Zambia crush Egypt

In a stunning upset at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations, rank outsiders Malawi defeated defending champions Nigeria 3-2 in Morocco. The Chawinga sisters, Temwa and Tabitha, were the stars of the match, scoring all three goals for Malawi. Temwa Chawinga opened the scoring in the 73rd minute, beating Nigeria's highly-rated goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie. Tabitha Chawinga then doubled Malawi's lead six minutes later. Nigeria managed to halve the deficit with a penalty converted by captain Rasheedat Ajibade in the 92nd minute. However, Malawi sealed their historic victory when Temwa Chawinga scored her second goal shortly after. This result marks one of the biggest shocks in the 28-year history of the WAFCON. Nigeria, ranked 36th in the world, entered the tournament as favorites, having won 10 of the previous 13 titles. Malawi, ranked 153rd, was competing for the first time. The victory places Malawi second in Group C, level on points with Zambia, who earlier defeated Egypt 6-0. Malawi and Zambia are now in strong positions to advance to the quarterfinals with victories in their next matches.
