Nigeria's Super Falcons, record champions of the WAFCON Cup, experienced a stunning upset in their opening match, falling 3-2 to tournament debutants Malawi. The defeat has cast doubt on Nigeria's ambition to secure an 11th title and qualify for the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Malawi, led by the impressive Chawinga sisters, Temwa and Tabita, secured a historic victory with three second-half goals. Temwa scored twice and Tabita once, giving the debutants a commanding lead.
