WAFCON 2026: Tanzania Stun South Africa as Côte d’Ivoire Hit Four in Explosive Group B Start

Tanzania delivered a stunning upset at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations on Monday, defeating powerhouse South Africa 2-1 in a dramatic Group B encounter. The victory marks a significant moment for Tanzanian football on the continental stage.

The match, held at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, saw Tanzania display remarkable discipline and spirit. From the outset, the East Africans showed their determination. Captain Opa Tukumbuke had an early chance in the 13th minute, but South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini made a crucial save. South Africa, the defending champions, faced further scares as Lebohang Ramalepe's back header nearly resulted in an own goal, and Karabo Dhlamini later struck the woodwork.

Despite South Africa's growing pressure, Tanzania broke the deadlock in the 37th minute. Diana Msewa skillfully beat Bongeka Gamede and slotted the ball past Dlamini to give Tanzania a deserved lead. However, Tanzania refused to back down. In the closing minutes of the match, substitute Hasnath Ubamba became the hero, brilliantly evading her marker before firing a low shot past Dlamini to secure a memorable victory. This crucial win gives Tanzania three points ahead of their next match against Burkina Faso.

In the other Group B match, Côte d'Ivoire made a strong statement with an emphatic 4-1 triumph over Burkina Faso. These results leave both Tanzania and Côte d'Ivoire level on points, setting up an intense battle for qualification to the quarter-finals.
