Waste Collectors in Italy Help Recover Lost Million-Euro Lottery Ticket

A fortunate woman in Italy has recovered a winning lottery ticket worth one million euros (approximately $1.1 million) thanks to the extraordinary efforts of garbage collectors. The instant prize ticket was found miraculously intact amidst the refuse in Puglia, southern Italy, according to the waste management company SAMB.

Roberto Nicola Toscano, an administrator for SAMB, explained that the woman had initially checked her ticket at a store, but the machine indicated it was 'non-payable.' This occurred because small retailers can only process smaller prize amounts, and she did not realize she had won the jackpot.

Her winning numbers were significant to her, being associated with a loved one. Upon returning home, a family member informed her that her usual numbers had indeed won. She rushed back to the store, only to discover the ticket had already been discarded and the trash collected.

Despite slim hopes, SAMB reconstructed the ticket's journey. They identified the correct garbage truck and intercepted it before its contents were unloaded. The truck was taken to a specialized facility where staff meticulously sifted through the waste for over a day. Amidst various tickets and coupon fragments, they finally located the winning ticket. Toscano recounted the woman's emotional reaction upon hearing the news. The company has stated the winner agreed to cover the costs incurred by the search, as SAMB is a public entity.
