Way cleared to acquire Irish long-range military radar

Ireland is set to acquire its first long-range military radar systems, a significant step in bolstering national defense capabilities. The government has approved the latest phase of the Military Radar Programme, clearing the path for the procurement of these advanced systems and further ground-based air defense enhancements.

This development marks a major milestone, granting the Defence Forces the unprecedented ability to monitor activity across Irish airspace. Minister for Defence Helen McEntee highlighted the program's importance, stating, "For the first time, the Defence Forces will have the capability to monitor activity across Irish airspace using long-range radar." She added that these systems, combined with new ground-based air defense capabilities, will substantially strengthen Ireland's ability to protect its skies.

The Commission on the Defence Forces had previously identified the urgent need for a primary radar capability to ensure Ireland could maintain a complete 'Recognised Air Picture.' France has been selected as the preferred partner for delivering this crucial radar program.

Progress is also being made on enhancing the Defence Forces' ground-based air defense, including the accelerated delivery of Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) in anticipation of Ireland's EU Presidency. The Department of Defence confirmed that work continues on other elements of the Military Radar Programme, such as the future development of maritime radar capability.

The first long-range radar systems are anticipated to be delivered next year, with the full operational capability expected by the end of 2028. This initiative is designed to significantly strengthen Ireland's security and its capacity to respond to aerial threats.
