Way Kanan sugarcane farmers request harvest discretion in Register 44, KSP seeks solution

Thousands of sugarcane farmers in Way Kanan, Lampung, face the threat of a failed harvest after administrative sanctions were imposed on their partner company, Inhutani V. The farmers, cultivating sugarcane in the Register 44 area, are appealing for a special permit to harvest their crops, which are ready for collection but cannot be accessed due to the sanctions.

Representing the farmers, I Nengah Aryata explained that they planted the sugarcane using borrowed capital and operated under legal partnerships. However, a dispute between Inhutani and the Ministry of Forestry resulted in administrative sanctions against Inhutani, preventing the farmers from harvesting. Aryata highlighted that their partnership with Inhutani has been ongoing for 11 years, during which approximately Rp75 billion in forest product revenue was remitted to the state. He specifically requested President Prabowo Subianto's intervention.

We are farmers, we plant using capital. The capital we use is borrowed capital. But when it's time to harvest, there's a problem between Inhutani and the Ministry of Forestry, so Inhutani received administrative sanctions. As a result, we farmers cannot harvest sugarcane. Even though our cooperation is legal.

Edison, the Head of the Way Kanan Sugarcane Farmers Group, detailed the scale of the impact. The Register 44 area spans 6,800 hectares, supporting approximately 1,200 households, with about 3,000 individuals involved in sugarcane farming activities. The halt in harvesting activities since June 12, 2026, threatens their livelihoods.

The Presidential Staff Office (KSP), led by Chief of Staff Gen. (Ret.) Dudung Abdurachman, met with the farmers' group in Jakarta. KSP has committed to coordinating with relevant agencies to find a resolution for the issue, aiming to alleviate the farmers' distress and prevent significant economic losses.
