WDR Defends Journalist Georg Restle Amid Antisemitism Accusations

The Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), a German public broadcaster, has publicly defended Georg Restle, the head of its ARD studio in Nairobi, against accusations of antisemitism. The controversy erupted after Restle shared a post on the platform X (formerly Twitter) regarding the migrant crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

Restle had retweeted an article from the US magazine The Nation, including an excerpt that described the events in Ceuta not as a humanitarian crisis or anti-colonial struggle, but as part of an effort by a "growing US-Israel-Morocco alliance" to undermine progressive European governments, divide Europe, and subvert international law. This post drew criticism and accusations of antisemitism on social media.

In response, WDR issued a statement asserting that "there is no doubt whatsoever about the personal integrity of Georg Restle." The broadcaster explicitly stated that linking Restle to antisemitism based on this post is "in no way justified" and that WDR is "expressly protecting" him against personal attacks that are "in part damaging to his reputation."

However, the criticism extended beyond social media. Felix Schotland, a board member of the Cologne synagogue community and the WDR broadcasting council, wrote a letter to WDR Program Director Andrea Schafarczyk. Schotland argued that such statements could "irreparably damage trust in the journalistic independence and credibility of WDR" and expressed concern that a leading WDR journalist would promote theories suggesting "geopolitical developments are being steered by a conspiratorial network."

Serap Güler, a state minister in the German Foreign Office, also commented on X, calling Restle's post "Antisemitism & Antiamerikanismus at its best" and deeming it shocking that a public broadcaster journalist would spread conspiracy theories.
