We Received Letters: 'Don't Participate!' Recalls Singer on Infamous Bayreuth 'Ring' Premiere

Tenor Heinz Zednik recalls the intense controversy surrounding the 1976 Bayreuth Festival's production of the "Ring" cycle, a staging that marked his international breakthrough. The production, directed by Patrice Chéreau, was initially met with significant opposition, leading to protests during performances and anonymous letters sent to the singers.

"Do not participate in this, please!" urged many of the letters, some signed and others anonymous. Zednik admits that some performers were initially dismayed, not only by Chéreau's unconventional direction but also by Pierre Boulez's unusually brisk conducting. Zednik himself felt unsettled at first, accustomed to the older, more traditional Karajan production from Vienna.

You can say that. Protests even took place during the performances. And we singers received letters, many anonymous, but many also with names and addresses, urging us: Please do not participate in this!

However, Zednik soon recognized Chéreau's emphasis on committed acting. This realization, he says, broke the ice for him and many colleagues. The production, despite its rocky start, eventually gained legendary status, leading to an extended run, an operatic film adaptation, and a CD release. Zednik highlights the exceptional musical performances, including Gwyneth Jones as Brünnhilde and Peter Hofmann as Siegmund, noting that some original cast members departed but the production achieved cult status.
