Weekend brings torrential downpours, hail, storms, and sharp weather cooling to Romania

Residents across Romania are advised to prepare for a significant weather shift as the weekend approaches, bringing a potent mix of severe atmospheric instability. The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued warnings for torrential downpours, hail, thunderstorms, and strong winds, particularly affecting the southern and western parts of the country, including Banat, Oltenia, Muntenia, and southwestern Transylvania, along with mountainous regions.

The forecast indicates that Saturday and Sunday will see a sharp cooling trend, with temperatures dropping noticeably, especially in the southern and southwestern areas, where it will be colder than the seasonal average. This abrupt change follows a period of more moderate weather, and the ANM's alerts highlight the potential for substantial rainfall, with accumulations of 20-50 liters per square meter in some areas. Wind gusts are also expected to reach 40-60 km/h, with isolated instances of stronger gusts up to 70 km/h, potentially causing localized damage.

In the second part of Saturday (May 16) and the night of Saturday to Sunday (May 16/17), the weather will be generally unstable in the south, west, northwest, center of the country and in the mountains. There will be downpours that will also be torrential and water quantities will accumulate, generally 20...50 l/sqm. Temporarily there will be electrical discharges and in restricted areas hail will fall. On Saturday, the wind will intensify in most regions and isolated violent winds will occur (gusts generally of 40... 60 km/h).
