Weekly Insulin Approved by FDA Could Simplify Diabetes Therapy in Indonesia

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Novo Nordisk's long-acting basal insulin, administered once weekly, for adult patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. This development offers a potentially simpler treatment regimen for millions managing the condition, moving away from the daily injections many currently undertake.

The weekly basal insulin is intended as a supplementary therapy alongside diet and exercise to help manage blood glucose levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The FDA's decision follows the completion of Phase 3 clinical trials involving approximately 2,680 adults with type 2 diabetes whose condition was not adequately controlled by existing treatments. Results indicated that the weekly formulation significantly helped lower HbA1c levels, maintaining a safety profile comparable to daily basal insulins.

Novo Nordisk views this approval as a significant step in its commitment to diabetes innovation. In Indonesia, diabetes remains a major health challenge, affecting over 20 million adults, according to Novo Nordisk data. Patient adherence to treatment has been a persistent issue, with some patients reporting feeling burdened by daily medication routines or frequently forgetting doses. The introduction of a weekly insulin option is seen as a practical alternative that could improve patient compliance and overall diabetes management.
