West Bank: Netanyahu wants to 'legalize' settlements after deadly clashes

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to "legalize" existing settlements and accelerate the expansion of outposts in the West Bank, following a violent confrontation that left six people dead. The recent incident, cited by Netanyahu as justification for his policy, occurred near the Israeli settlement of Havat Gilad. Palestinian health officials reported four Palestinians killed and four injured in the nearby village of Tell. The Israeli army stated that an Israeli soldier and a member of a settlement security team were shot and killed.

Conflicting accounts of the incident have emerged. Walid Sidan, the head of Tell village, claimed that around 20 Israeli settlers "stormed" the village in the morning, leading to clashes with residents. He alleged that Israeli soldiers opened fire alongside the settlers. Video footage confirmed by the Israeli military shows armed men in civilian clothes and at least one Israeli soldier confronting Palestinians. The footage depicts two armed men approaching a group of Palestinians, who attempt to disarm one of them before shots are fired. The army stated the man who took the settler's weapon was armed when shot. Another video, verified by the military, shows Israeli forces firing on Palestinians already on the ground.

In response to the escalating violence, the Israeli military announced preparations for a comprehensive operation in the West Bank. The announcement by Netanyahu to expand and legalize settlements is likely to further inflame tensions in the region and draw international criticism.
