West Java Hit by Earthquakes, Some Linked to Megathrust Zone

West Java experienced tectonic earthquakes on Thursday evening and Friday morning, July 30-31, 2026, affecting Sukabumi and Cianjur regencies. The quakes originated from different locations, with one measuring 1.9 magnitude on land near Cianjur and another at 4.1 magnitude at sea southwest of Sukabumi.

According to Hartanto, Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Regional II Tangerang, the earthquakes were triggered by active fault activity and subduction, with the latter originating from the megathrust zone. The tremor near Cianjur occurred at a depth of 18 kilometers, while the Sukabumi quake was at 39 kilometers.

Residents felt the tremors with varying intensity. In Cianjur, the shaking was mild, causing light objects to sway. However, in the Ciracap region, the tremor was felt more strongly, resembling the sensation of a passing truck, while in Pelabuhan Ratu, it was felt at a lower intensity. So far, no damage to buildings has been reported from these seismic events.
