West Java Lawmakers Push for Upgraded Fishing Ports to Boost Economy

West Java's Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) Commission II is pushing for the provincial government to accelerate the elevation of several Fish Landing Bases (Pangkalan Pendaratan Ikan - PPI) to the status of Coastal Fishing Ports (Pelabuhan Perikanan Pantai - PPP). This strategic move is intended to broaden the scope of fishing operations and, consequently, enhance the economic well-being of local fishermen while boosting the region's own income (Pendapatan Asli Daerah - PAD).

Lina Ruslinawati, Deputy Chair of Commission II, explained during a working visit to the Muara Ciasem Fishing Port in Indramayu that the current PPI status limits the services and activities possible. This limitation has led some fishing vessels to dock and unload their catches in other provinces. "If the port status is upgraded, West Java's opportunities to increase fishing activities will be greater," Lina stated. "Catch yields can be landed at West Java's ports, impacting PAD and simplifying the recording of fishery production."

The upgrade is expected to create a multiplier effect for coastal communities. Attracting vessels from various regions could stimulate trade, services, and the processing of fishery products. This transformation would position the ports not just as landing sites but as vibrant economic hubs for coastal residents. Commission II plans to urge relevant regional agencies to expedite the upgrade applications to the central government, as the authority rests with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. They hope for a swift process to develop West Java's fishing ports into more modern, productive centers benefiting the community.

Meanwhile, Dendi, Head of the Muara Ciasem Fishing Port UPTD, highlighted sedimentation as a key operational challenge requiring immediate attention. He also expressed hope for the swift realization of the Dadap Fishing Port project, which is planned to be managed by the West Java Provincial Government. The feasibility study for Dadap Port is complete, and its development is seen as crucial for strengthening fishery services in the Indramayu coastal area.
