West Java Police allow public to fight street robbers

West Java Police are empowering both law enforcement and the public to confront "begal," or street robbers, as incidents surge across the region. Inspector General Pipit Rismanto, the head of the West Java Regional Police, issued a directive for "firm and measured" action against perpetrators.

"The Provincial Police Chief's order is to act firmly and proportionately. This applies not only to the police but also to the public, with the caveat that it must remain firm and measured," explained Komisaris Besar Hendra Rochmawan, Head of Public Relations for the West Java Regional Police. He emphasized that actions should not result in permanent disability or death.

For the public, this directive serves as an appeal to act decisively when encountering "begal" while awaiting police arrival. This measure is a direct response to the alarming increase in robbery activities reported in several cities within West Java. In response, various local police units have intensified patrols through routine large-scale operations.

The instruction highlights a growing concern over public safety and the police's strategy to involve citizens in deterring crime, albeit with clear guidelines to prevent excessive force and unintended tragic consequences.
